Hypoallergenic Dog Breeds (Small, Medium, & Large Breeds!)

Hypoallergenic is a word you may see or hear a lot once you start the dog adoption process. If a dog is "hypoallergenic," it just means they are less or unlikely to cause an allergic reaction! Many people are allergic to dogs, especially if they shed all day long. Hypoallergenic dogs don't shed (well...only a littttle bit. Like humans!), making them great household pets for anyone allergic or sensitive to dog hair. Many different breeds are hypoallergenic, and to find the right match for you and your home, we've broken some of them down for you. We have compiled a list of multiple different hypoallergenic dog breeds in each size category so you can make the best decision for your lifestyle and not cause any allergic reactions.

Small Breeds

Affenpinscher - This breed is a low-shedding, wiry coat, under 20-pound dog. They have a short face with a wiry, almost shaggy coat. Their hair is very low maintenance and won't shed or cause any serious reactions out of you (as always please have caution with any hypoallergenic dog breed in case you are super sensitive!). Affenpinschers have black, gray, silver, red, tan, or beige hair.

Bichon Frise - This breed is outgoing and very playful. They have a fluffy white coat that, surprisingly, doesn't shed. They do require some regular professional grooming to keep their fluffy hair at bay, but it's worth it. They are typically 7 - 12 pounds and always have white hair!

Coton de Tulear - This breed is known for being a companion dog and they love to be with you all day long. They can be anywhere from 8 to 15 pounds, the males tending to weigh more. They do need daily brushing with a conditioning spray to help keep their coat fresh, but they won't shed or cause any allergy irritations.

Poodle (Miniature and Toy) - Poodles may be the most well-known hypoallergenic breed. This breed comes in all three breed sizes (small, medium & large), so they are the perfect hypoallergenic breed to match whatever your life needs. Poodles have a curly and non-shedding coat that does require professional grooming. They are great compassionate dogs, and while they are lively and energetic - they can be calm in the house!

Medium Breeds

Bedlington Terrier - This breed feels, and looks, like a little lamb. Their super soft coats don't shed much and only require maintenance every couple months. They are very gentle and loving, making them great household dogs. They can be around 17 - 23 pounds and typically have a light color coat!

Kerry Blue Terrier - Like their name, Kerry Blue Terrier do actually have a coat that is a shade of blue! Ranging from deep slate to a more light-blue gray tone to black. They will be under 40 pounds but are on the larger side of dog breeds. Their no-shed coat will require regular brushing, as well as regular haircuts to keep their blue hair from getting too out of control.

Peruvian Inca Orchid - This breed is very rare, more rare than the traditional hypoallergenic breeds! They originated in Peru and are similar to Greyhounds or Whippets - making them very loyal and protective. This breed does come in 3 different sizes and can have a variety of different coat types, all of which will be hypoallergenic.

Portuguese Water Dog - This breed became more well known when it became a White House dog (Sunny and Bo!). This medium breed has thick curly hair that sheds seasonally, is hypoallergenic and can be groomed a variety of different ways. This breed is for you if you love the water because they are athletic and water-loving dogs!

Large Breeds

Irish Water Spaniel - This breed is one of the largest hypoallergenic dog breeds! They have long, tall legs and have a curly coat. They do shed seasonally, but their coat is hypoallergenic and will respond best to regular brushing and trimming.

Lagotto Ramagnolo - This breed resembles a teddy-bear. They have a thick curly coat that sheds very minimally. They can be anywhere from 24 - 53 pounds and will fall on the larger side of the scale!

Spanish Water Dogs - This breed has a very unique coat, very similar to a "Mop Dog", that is curly and wooly and if grown out long will form tight cords - giving them that Mop look. You can choose to keep their hair short to avoid the extra care the long hair brings, but either way they will not shed a lot. This breed is large and if you couldn't tell from their name, love the water!

Doodles -  Doodle mixes, like Labradoodles and Goldendoodles are by far the most common and most recognizable names when it comes to hypoallergenic breeds. While they are a great breed, they are not, naturally, a hypoallergenic dog. These doodle mixes are breeds that were mixed with a poodle. While poodles are hypoallergenic, the counter breed is not always. It is difficult to determine the coat doodles will end up with, making it difficult to determine how hypoallergenic they will be. We included them in this list because they are very common - but it is important to note they will fall in the middle when it comes to being hypoallergenic. They're perfect if you are slightly allergic and are just wanting to avoid as much shedding as possible!
